Hi there! So what's your name?

Tiara De Silva

Where do you call home?

Sydney, Australia

What do you do?

I am a Youth Activist, a Youth Ambassador for Reachout AU, and a Campaigner for the Australian Conservation Fund

Tell us your story

As a child, i grew up in a very socio-politically conscious family, as well as a family that really valued community. My parents instilled family and community values within me at a very early age through their fundraisers for Tsunami relief in Sri Lanka, and their general sedulous nature, and willingness to help others. My late father valued family, justice, kindness and bravery and I believe that these traits helped advance my activism and my demeanour towards family and friends. I have ambitions to try and make this world a better place, whether it be helping others in need or one day pursuing a career that is able to make tangible, legislative change

If you could go back in time, what would you tell your younger self?

Time is precious. You’re going to lose a lot. You wont be able to spend as much time with Thatti (your dad) as you wanted too, and life will hit you with a lot. Academic stress will pile, friends who you thought were there for you will walk away when you need them most, and you will feel miserable. But you will also gain so much. You will feel the love, people who value you will come into your life and you’ll sit with yourself one day and realise, “if i made it through what life threw at me then, I can make it through the now”

What does "living freely" mean to you?

“Living Freely” means appreciating the many sacrifices and decisions that my parents and family made so i can have a good life. Living freely means doing what is right by myself and being honest to who I am
